Narrative in Ads


1) How does the advert use narrative? Apply at least three narrative theories to the text, making specific reference to specific shots or key scenes in the advert.

2) Read this BBC feature on some of the people in the advert. How does the advert use celebrities and less well-known people to create stories in the advert?

It uses celebrities and less well-known people to create a story that people living in the capital are all linked and equal, even though their social statuses are different, the place they live join them together.                                   

3) Read this AdWeek feature and interview on the Nike London advert. [Note: this may now be behind a paywall - you can find the text from the article here]. How did the advert use technical codes (camerawork, mise-en-scene, editing etc.) to help create narratives that could connect with the audience?

The scenary of a train and an outdoor football cage allows the audience to connect with the narrative as they can relate to the setting and make the narrative feel local and close to home. The characters also speak directly facing the camera which makes what they're saying seem more personal to the audience.

4) What representation of London does the advert offer?

It offers the representation that London is accepting of all sorts of people (no matter of class or social status) and allows young people to make something of themselves and build a social

5) Why might this advert appeal to an audience?

It might appeal to an audience as they can feel connected towards the actors that are talking towards them and feel a personal connection to the area the advert is set in. They may also be more likely to purchase Nike products as they feel like the company cares and relates to londoners.
